CBSE Class 6–9 Maths Syllabus: What's Changed, What's New, and How to Prepare
The Syllabus Has Changed — Not Just the Book Cover
Many parents assume that a new textbook simply means old chapters with new pictures. With Ganita Prakash and Ganita Manjari, that is not the case. The sequence of topics, the way they are taught, the type of questions asked, and even some of the topics themselves have changed. Understanding these changes early in the year makes preparation much smoother.
What Has Changed in Classes 6 to 8
Topics are now spread out and revisited. For example, Class 7 has two separate chapters on decimals, and Class 8 has two chapters on proportional reasoning. Chapters such as "Number Play" appear in every year from Class 6 to Class 8, building number sense gradually. Traditional chapter names like "Rational Numbers", "Comparing Quantities" or "Mensuration" no longer appear; their content is redistributed into new chapters with new titles.
There is also a clear emphasis on patterns, puzzles, estimation and reasoning, and on Indian mathematical heritage — for example, "The Baudhayana-Pythagoras Theorem" in Class 8.
What Is New in Class 9
Class 9 sees the biggest jump. The old Class 9 book had twelve chapters including Number Systems, Polynomials, Euclid's Geometry, Triangles, Heron's Formula and Statistics. Ganita Manjari reorganises this content and adds new areas: probability in "The Mathematics of Maybe", arithmetic and geometric progressions in "Predicting What Comes Next", logical statements in "Propositions and their Converses", and step-by-step procedures in "The World of Algorithms". Students who learned AP only in Class 10 under the old syllabus will now meet it a year earlier.

What Has Changed in the Questions
The new books ask open-ended questions more often: "Can you find another way?", "Is this always true?", "Explain why." Practice questions are placed throughout the chapter in "Figure it Out" sets rather than only at the end. School exams are gradually moving in the same direction, with more competency-based and case-based questions that test whether a student can apply an idea in a new situation.
How to Prepare — A Practical Plan
First, read each chapter fully, including the stories and activities — they often contain the core idea. Second, attempt every Figure it Out question in a notebook before checking any solution. Third, after checking, write one line in your own words about why the method works. Fourth, revise previous classes' chapters on the same theme; because topics spiral, a weak foundation in Class 7 decimals or Class 8 proportional reasoning shows up quickly in Class 9. Finally, practise a mix of chapters every weekend so that you learn to recognise which idea a question needs.
For Parents: How You Can Help
You do not need to remember school mathematics to help. Ask your child to explain a solved question to you in their own words. If they can explain it clearly, they have understood it. If they get stuck, a good solution book that shows each step will help them find exactly where their reasoning went wrong.
