From Class 6 to Class 9: A Simple Roadmap Through the New CBSE Maths Syllabus

Why Think in Terms of a Roadmap?

Mathematics is cumulative — every year builds on the last. The new NCERT books make this especially clear because they deliberately revisit topics at increasing depth. Instead of looking at each class separately, it helps to see how each major strand of mathematics grows from Class 6 to Class 9. If a student is struggling in Class 9, this roadmap shows exactly which earlier chapters to revisit.

Strand 1: Numbers and Number Sense

Class 6 starts with "Patterns in Mathematics", "Number Play", "Prime Time" and "The Other Side of Zero" (integers). Class 7 extends this with "Large Numbers Around Us", "Operations with Integers" and two chapters on decimals. Class 8 brings "A Square and a Cube", "Power Play" (exponents) and "A Story of Numbers". In Class 9, "The World of Numbers" ties everything together with rational and irrational numbers, and "Predicting What Comes Next" introduces sequences and progressions.

Strand 2: Fractions, Ratio and Proportion

Fractions are introduced in Class 6, operated on in Class 7's "Working with Fractions", and connected to percentages in Class 8's "Fractions in Disguise". Proportional reasoning gets two full chapters in Class 8. These ideas are the foundation for probability in Class 9 and for much of science and commerce later.

Strand 3: Algebra

Algebra begins gently in Class 7 with "Expressions using Letter-Numbers" and "Finding the Unknown" (simple equations). In Class 8, "We Distribute, Yet Things Multiply" and "Algebra Play" develop algebraic manipulation and identities. Class 9 moves to "Introduction to Linear Polynomials", "Exploring Algebraic Identities" and "Two Variables, One Line". A student who is weak in Class 9 algebra almost always benefits from revisiting the Class 7 and 8 algebra chapters.

Strand 4: Geometry

Class 6 covers "Lines and Angles", "Playing with Constructions" and "Symmetry". Class 7 adds parallel lines, triangles ("A Tale of Three Intersecting Lines"), congruence ("Geometric Twins") and "Constructions and Tilings". Class 8 brings "Quadrilaterals", "The Baudhayana-Pythagoras Theorem" and "Exploring Some Geometric Themes". Class 9 continues with coordinates, circles, quadrilaterals and logical reasoning through "Propositions and their Converses".

Strand 5: Measurement and Data

"Perimeter and Area" in Class 6 grows into "Area" in Class 8 and then "Measuring Space" and "Math of Space: Surface Area and Volume" in Class 9. Data handling starts with pictographs and bar graphs in Class 6, develops through Classes 7 and 8, and becomes "How Quantities Combine: Understanding Data" and probability in Class 9.

Using the Roadmap for Revision

At the start of each new chapter, ask: which earlier chapter does this build on? Spend fifteen minutes revising that chapter first. This simple habit closes gaps before they grow, and it is especially useful when moving from Class 8 to Class 9, where the level rises sharply.
