Teaching the New NCERT Maths Curriculum: A Chapter-wise Overview for Classes 6–9
A Curriculum Built for Active Classrooms
Ganita Prakash and Ganita Manjari are designed to be taught, not merely read out. Chapters are structured around short sections, embedded activities and frequent "Figure it Out" question sets. Many concepts are meant to be discovered by students through exploration before being formalised. For teachers, this means planning lessons around student activity and discussion, with enough time for children to try, fail, discuss and try again.
Complete Chapter Overview — Classes 6 to 9
Below is the full chapter list across the four classes. Note that in Classes 7 and 8, chapter numbering restarts in Part 2, while Ganita Manjari Part 2 for Class 9 continues the numbering from Chapter 9. It is helpful to refer to chapters by part and title in school circulars and term plans to avoid confusion.

Planning the Academic Year
A natural split for Classes 7 and 8 is Part 1 in the first term and Part 2 in the second, though schools will adjust this based on their calendars. Because the books spiral — decimals, proportional reasoning and Number Play all recur — teachers can plan short "bridge" revisions at the start of a chapter that builds on an earlier one. For Class 9, give extra time to the genuinely new areas such as probability, sequences, propositions and algorithms, since students and parents will have less prior exposure to them.
Classroom Strategies That Work
Let students attempt the opening puzzle or activity before explaining anything. Use pair and group discussion for the more open-ended Figure it Out questions. Ask students to present more than one method and compare them. Encourage the use of estimation before calculation. And connect the Indian mathematical heritage content — such as Baudhayana in Class 8 — to class discussion, since students find these connections meaningful.
Assessment Aligned with the New Approach
Include questions that ask students to explain, justify or find an error, alongside routine calculations. Case-based questions built on real-life situations mirror the style of the textbooks well. Rather than testing only final answers, give credit for clear reasoning — this sends students the right message about what matters.
